About Biobank

Today, many developed countries of the world, there are biobanks, some country’s biobanks are private, at university clinics or national. The Republic of Kazakhstan is no exception, in which there is an urgent need to increase the level of science, innovations, new approaches to personalized medicine. A team of authors proposes a project to create a biobank with subsequent digital format.

The main goals of the project were: improvement of diagnostics of pathologies of the nervous system, digitalization of pathomorphological and molecular genetic studies for the implementation of personalized medicine in the Republic of Kazakhstan; the creation of a centralized (unified) biobank of pathologies of the nervous system will allow conducting scientific research aimed at the development of neuroscience, improving the quality and increasing the life expectancy of neurosurgical patients in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Now, for pathologists, the diagnosis of tumors of the central nervous system is a difficult task, given the specificity of their diagnosis. In the process of diagnostics, not only the pathohistological structure of the tumor is considered, but also the most significant molecular genetic changes and chromosomal aberrations in the tumor cell. Scientists from leading foreign universities have carried out many studies where they studied potential pathomorphological, proliferative and molecular markers that are associated with aggressive clinical manifestations and will provide a more accurate prognosis for patients with gliomas. Molecular changes deserve special attention: CDKN2A / B point mutation, CDKN2A / B promoter methylation, CDK4 amplification, homozygous RB1 deletion, CDK6 amplification, PIK3R1 mutation, PIK3CA mutation, PDGFRA amplification and others.

We will study whether there are thresholds of proliferative activity based on the number of mitoses in cells, the level of the proliferative index Ki-67, or other pathomorphological features typical for glial tumors that may correlate with the outcome of the disease and improve modern diagnostic criteria and will also be digitized the results of these studies.

The creation and improvement of a modern pathomorphological laboratory, digitalization of research and the creation of an electronic biobank will contribute to improving the quality of diagnostics of tumors of the central nervous system and the development of science in neurooncology. The result of the created modern pathomorphological laboratory may be the creation of a reference neuropathomorphological laboratory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on the basis of the pathological department of the “National Center of Neurosurgery” JSC.

The electronic biobank in the era of personalized medicine will carry the main goal of developing the research potential and biosecurity of the country. And it will be a unique modern platform for attracting investments, both foreign and domestic, with the aim of developing science, clinics, and diagnostics of tumors of the central nervous system.

The existence of a biobank will make it possible to enter the international register of biobanks, expand the possibilities for conducting scientific research with related scientific fields, will serve as a powerful impetus to the development of molecular genetic studies of both pathologies of the brain and the nervous system as a whole, and will also make it possible to create a neuroscience laboratory with the latest equipment, in which it will be possible to conduct molecular genetic studies of both pathologies of the brain and the nervous system as a whole, which will lead to an improvement in the quality and prolongation of the life of patients.

Implementing organization: JSC “National Center for Neurosurgery” is the one of the leading neurosurgical clinics in Central Asia, providing a full range of neurosurgical services from diagnostics to rehabilitation of patients, using the most modern methods of treatment. The mission of the Center is to create an effective system for the provision of neurosurgical care, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of the population of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Currently, it occupies one of the leading places in Central Asia in the treatment of neurosurgical diseases and is the flagship of medical innovations, a leading scientific and clinical Center in the field of neurosurgery. Clinic capacity: 160 beds in 6 clinical departments.

Scientific supervisor of the program: Akshulakov Serik – Doctor of Medical Sciences, the Member (Academician) of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Professor, Freelance Chief Neurosurgeon of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
